Monrovia, Liberia

From San Francisco to Liberia

October 5, 2020

Willie Y. McGill

When I first saw an electric car, I was like: “Oh My God, am I dreaming?!” This might sound amusing, but this was my experience. Firstly, I never knew that there was such a thing as an electric vehicle. Before moving to the field of renewable energy, I had already spent three years studying automobiles. At the time, I was convinced that the source of power for vehicles was the combustion engine. Understanding the fundamental principles and complexity of these engines, I came to the conclusion that all automobiles needed them.

"When I developed my love for EVs, I also dreamt of having them in my own country."

In 2013, when I visited  San Francisco, California, for renewable energy training, what I saw completely shocked me, a car using electricity as fuel! This was my first encounter with this incredible technology: Electric Vehicles, also known as EVs. There I was, astonished by the technology, I instantly fell in love and became passionate to find out  how it operates. When I developed my love for EVs, I also dreamt of having them in my own country. Back home, over the years my desire for this has grown overwhelmingly. Years passed by and I still believed that one day soon Liberia would have EVs flying through the city streets. I always hoped that our environment filled with polluted air would be clean again. You are reading this story because my dream is about to come to fruition and we have divinely been linked  so you can be a part of my dream’s fulfillment.

You may probably know already that Liberia is the oldest republic in Africa. Liberia was originally founded as a homeland for former slaves back from the USA in 1821. Liberia has seen many difficulties. It experienced several military coups, and the First Liberian Civil War in 1989 and the Second Liberian Civil War ten years later. My family and I have not been spared by the civil wars. My parents lost our home and later settled in a rural part of the country. I went to live with my aunt Yneyah, in the city of Kakata. She raised me. Sadly in 2014, she died during the Ebola epidemic. Life became difficult for me, but I never lost hope.

Those challenging events have led me to devote my time and efforts to do better with my life. It was not long before I had the opportunity to attend one of the country's finest technical vocational institutes. This was the birthplace of my engineering dreams. We, at Emergi, are about to introduce EVs in Liberia. Emergi is an answer for Liberia's youthful population, as it will create better paying  jobs for young people like me. This will give me and my fellow young Liberians, the opportunity to improve our lives, families and the nation at large.

I ask you to give all the support you can and let us make our dreams come true.

“I love e-kekehs!!!”
