About youth campaigns, alternative messaging and a parrot

While the internet is used as an instrument for recruitment and propaganda by extremists of all sorts, research has shown that any strategy that hopes to counter (online) radicalisation and violent extremism must create an environment in which the production and consumption of such materials becomes, not only less accessible in a technical sense, but unacceptable and less desirable. In practice it means that we need to drown out this extremist content with better messages, with reasonable messages – in particular for youth. It also means we need to solve the so-called ‘access-to-information’ problem, as many youth are making bad decisions based on bad, partial information. Therefore, part of the solution lies in enabling youth to deliver alternative messages, access diverse information, and participate in non-violent and peaceful ways.

In this session we look at a variety of (youth) campaigns across the world, which envision to counter radicalisation and violent extremism on one hand, and encourage more positive messaging on the other hand. What makes a good campaign? How to push back against negative campaigning and polarisation? How to encourage youth to raise their voice peacefully?
