Jeroen joined Emergi in December 2022. He has a background in IT and entrepreneurship, and has been part of the founding team of two social enterprises. In 2023, he moved to Monrovia to take up a role as country lead business development as part of our team in Liberia.Since he was young, Jeroen has always felt a strong need to help others, especially if they were treated unfairly. For this reason, during his minor Sustainable Development in Developing Countries, he worked for a development NGO in India. The experience was an inspiring one. He recognised how challenging it can be to realise good systemic solutions, but also that he could really make a difference! Additionally, he has been striving for a just and sustainable future for years as part of the the climate movement, where he is an organizer, gives lectures and trainings and takes part in protest actions.Jeroen’s colleagues and clients always tell him he is skilled at understanding the essence of what is needed. That's why his solutions are always effective and to-the-point. He would love to use this quality to work on the SDGs and in a new leading role in the innovative E-Kekeh pilot project.

Role

LinkedIN

Shermuker Jeffrey Makain Jr. holds a bachelor's degree in Commerce from the University of Cape Coast. He worked with international non-governmental organizations for over five years before starting his own manual drilling company in Liberia. His company currently uses EMAS technology to provide safe and clean drinking water for poor Liberian citizens who are willing to offer labor to drill their own boreholes and make hand pumps in their homes or public places. Shermuker and his team have used the EMAS method to drill 18 boreholes in three months, supporting climate change sensitivity and adaptation strategies in southeast Liberia. The team transported borehole materials to the hardest-to-reach farms of Liberia through off-road conditions. After the Mandela Washington Fellowship for Young African Leaders, Shermuker will continue training youth in how to make their own drilling stems and hand pumps as a source of livelihood, thus reducing the unemployment rate in Liberia.

Shermuker supports Emergi Liberia as intern since January 2024.
